The Project

M/s GSPC LNG Limited had proposed to set up a LNG terminal at Mundra, Gujarat, which is designed to have a berth for bearing LNG tankers of sizes 75000 m3 to 260,000 m3, two LNG storage tanks, facilities for regasification & gas evacuation facilities etc. Toyo Engineering India Limited had commissioned Keller for ground improvement works to support the foundations for the structures such as Incoming Substation, Process Substation, Control Building and Utility Liquid Tanks.

The Challenge

Based on the underlain subsoil condition and the loading conditions of the proposed structures, the major geotechnical challenges were to reduce the settlements, increase the bearing capacity of the soil by increasing shear strength and decrease the liquefaction potential by increasing the density and/or permeability.

The Solution

Based on the analysis done on the geotechnical challenges associated with the project, Keller opined and executed ground improvement using deep vibro replacement technique and vibro compaction technique as an effective solution in order to support the proposed structure to mitigate liquefaction, to reduce excessive long term post construction settlement and to enhance bearing capacity. Additional advantage of using aforementioned technique is that it provides effective drainage paths to ensure rapid dissipation of excess port water pressure.
