Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd, Pipavav, Gujarat

Key Achievements

  • Design and build Ground Improvement solution carried out with accuracy and precision followed by series of test for assuring the quality of work done.
  • Best use of technology for effectively monitoring the various stages of development to ensure adequate depth of treatment and compaction effort.

The Project

Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd ( GPPL ) was expanding the already existing berth and terminal facilities at APM Terminals, Pipavav. As a part of expansion, approx. 1,80,000 m2 is being developed on filled up soil. Keller was approached by APM to design and build  ground improvement works by vibro stone column works at proposed location.

The Challenge

Extensive soil investigation carried out by Keller suggested that the soil had low bearing capacity and is also prone to settlements. Filling, designing and executing ground improvement works was required for approx. 1,80,000 m2 area. The treatment area was also to be extended beyond the footprint area to facilitate a smooth transition between treated and untreated soil.

The Solution

Keller designed and executed a ground improvement solution that met the settlement criteria and increase the bearing capacity of soil. Vibro stone columns of 0.9m dia to the depth of approx. 9m were installed using 3 rigs ( state of art equipment's for vibro stone columns ) for complete yard area. Plate Load tests were conducted to ascertain the efficiency of ground improvement works done. All the stone columns were monitored using automatic data recording systems to ensure adequate depth of treatment and compaction efforts.
